On September 24th, Huobi, an internationally known cryptocurrency exchange, became the target of a cyberattack. The attack resulted in the loss of $8M in digital assets.
According to CyversAlerts, hackers broke into one of Huobi's hot wallets and stole 5,000 ETH (about $7.9M). The breach was discovered, and the compromised wallet was disabled as a result.
Following the incident, Huobi adopted an unusual strategy. The exchange sent a message to the hackers' address offering a 5% 'white hat' bonus if they returned the stolen fund. 'White hat' hackers are ethical hackers who report flaws in order to improve security.
Justin Sun, a member of the exchange's global advisory board, confirmed the hack. Nonetheless, despite the loss of 5,000 ETH, Huobi has accepted full responsibility, fixed the issues, and secured the protection of user funds. The platform remains fully operational.
